Just came from the speech class. Was "preparing" for my speech only today, from 9 to 12:40. I had a rough outline and the information, but... It was not enough. I knew that I should have prepared earlier. I should have practiced my speech a least a couple of times. I always leave everything for the last moment. Bad, bad girl!!!
I ran out of time for the speech. Didn't cover all of the information. If I only would have prepared earlier and practiced speaking, then I would have known that I need to make the history part shorter. I just went blank when the 5 minute card appeared. Well, actually I didn't really see the 5. I was shoked by the 6. The 5 means that I have spoken for 5 minutes. Six minutes is the limit. The speech needs to be between 5 and 6 minutes. When the 6 shows up, it's 5:40 - you have 20 seconds to wrap up! That was crazy! I went over the limit a little. That is a deduction!
I just barely covered the first of the 3 main points. Of course had the intro and then brief conclusion (which did not really tie to the brief info that I gave; it was supposed to wrap up the whole speech that I prepared.
also, the visual aid was not in order. I had pictures. Used only 3 or 4 of them. Had like 10 or more.
didn't bring the tape (ran out of time!!!). Brandon gave me one, because had an extra.
My speech was on Gelendzhik. We had a lot of guidelines to go by. But don't have to follow our outline word by word. Yeah, we had to do a sentense outline of the speech (it is worth separate points for our grade). so we basically wrote down almost everything we had to say. I think that mine turned out pretty good. But...too long. Actually, when you read it, it's not over 5 minutes. It's just that I keep on talking on each point too much. If I just pretty much read the outline, I would have been fine. That is if I had prepared the picture slide show well enough.
Oh, well! I did what I could (at the last moment!). I always fail myself. It's my fault. i knew it. I know it. I need to change my attitude. Need to start early on projects. I always say that. But... Well, on this one I did start early. I had the info. The outline was due a week ago. I rushed through it. good thing that it was not graded! Didn't have an intro or conclusion. In the end I changed most of the info on the body of the outline.
Well, here is the outline:

Introduction
I. Imagine that you were presented with a vacation invitation with tickets provided. You had to choose between taking the tickets to Hawaii or a place that you have never heard of before and think that you would not attempt to try to pronounce the name of. Would you take the Hawaii ticket or the other one?
II. Well, today I am going to tell you a little about a city with a strange sounding name that is my dream vacation destination!
III. It just happened that I was born in the city of Gelendzhik, Russia. I have moved with my family to America and left my birth city 7 years ago. And ever since it has been my dream to go back and visit the place of my childhood that has enchanted me.
Transition – First of all lets find out how the city and the name came to be.
Body
I. The origins and history of Gelendzhik – the name and the city.
A. The name came from Turkish dialect.
1. You probably think that you would not be able to pronounce that weird complicated Russian word. Well, I’ll tell you something, you’re not alone in that! Most Russian people who come upon the word Gelendzhik for the first time, have trouble pronouncing it too. That is because the word is not even Russian. There are two versions of what it means. One is Khulyzhy, means a small pasture (glade) in Adygej.
2. The second meaning is believed to be the same word but in Turkish version as Kelendchik. It’s translated as “bride”.
B. The Black Sea Coast, where the present Gelendzhik is located, has been occupied since ancient times, has a rich history.
1. Ancient Turkish burial cites are found 6 km of Gelendzhik. These are called dolmens, dating 3 - 2 thousand BC.
2. Turkish port since the late 15 century. In the middle ages the Adygey tribes lived on the place. They first named it, as I mentioned earlier. And there is a story about the “white bride”.
3. In 1831, the place became a Russian fortress named Gelendzhik. It was blown out during the Crimean War.
4. Later it was rebuilt as a settlement. And the status of the city was clamed in 1915. Since those times there the place was acknowledged to have good climate and the air was fresh and clean, so sanatoriums started to appear.
Transition – Now lets talk about how the city came to have this healthy air.
II. Position: Gelendzhik is a small city in the Southwest of Russia.
A. Uniquely position – put between two nature features.
1. On one side of the city is the Black Sea Coast.
2. The other side – Caucasian mountain ridge, called Markhot.
B. The climate of Geledzhik is sub-tropical mild.
1.Warm air comes from the sea.
2. Cools off during the night because of the mountains.
3. The Pitsunda pine freshens the air.
Transition – Given the good climate, the rich history, and the beautiful landscape Gelendzhik is a perfect site for tourists.
II. The city of Gelendzhik is not just a resort city, it is a health resort city with many tourist attraction cites.
A. Better appearance kept up by the mayor’s orders.
1. The streets are being cleaned.
2. Roads rebuilt, and the main boulevard by the beach started to be reconstructed 3 years ago.
B. There are many recreational cites in Gelendzhik and the outlying villages that belong to the Gelendzhik resort.
1. Gelendzhik 12 villages, 7 of them are resort villages: Kabardinka, Arhipo-Osipovka, Divnomorskoe, Djanhot, Praskoveevka, Krinitsa, Betta. They each have their own beaches and a few recreational cites.
2. There are beaches, sanatoriums, hotels, aqua park, and other recreational parks.
3. Mountains, rivers, waterfalls and forests provide another variety of entertainment.
Transition – As you have seen, Gelendzhik is a unique little health resort city.
Conclusion
During the research that I have done on Gelendzhik, I have found out a lot of new information, including the changes that have occurred there since I left when I was just 12 years old. I might have collected more information in my brain but I know that I have always known Gelendzhik by heart. It is my home. And when I go back there, I will look past the changes, past the new buildings, I will see the memories of my childhood come alive right before my eyes and my eyes only because they are etched in my heart.
